The rule YouTube actually publishes

YouTube's own description is short: a view counts when a viewer intentionally starts playing a video on their device and watches it. Views that look automated, or that come from playback nobody chose, are filtered out.

YouTube does not publish a minimum number of seconds for a long video. The widely repeated figure of 30 seconds has never been confirmed by YouTube, and it is not a rule you can rely on.

What it does make clear is that counting is not instant and not final. Views are checked, and ones that fail the checks are removed.

Why view counts lag, freeze or fall

A new video's public count can run behind what YouTube Studio shows while views are being checked. That gap usually closes within a day or two.

Counts can also go down. When YouTube decides a batch of views was not genuine, it removes them after the fact, and the public count drops. A sudden fall of hundreds or thousands at once is almost always this.

Studio's figures and the public count can differ for a while for the same reason. Studio is the one to trust for your own analysis.

Shorts: every play counts now

From 31 March 2025, YouTube changed how Shorts views are counted. A view is now counted each time a Short starts to play or replays, with no minimum watch time. Short-form platforms already counted this way, and YouTube moved to match.

The old method did not disappear. It lives on in Studio as engaged views, which count only plays YouTube considers genuine engagement.

That matters for monetisation, because the Shorts route into the YouTube Partner Program is measured in engaged views, not the larger public figure.

Which views count toward monetisation

The YouTube Partner Program needs 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 valid public watch hours on long videos in the last 12 months, or 10 million valid public Shorts views in the last 90 days.

Watch hours from Shorts do not count toward the 4,000. Nor do hours on videos that are private, unlisted or deleted, or views YouTube has removed.

The word that does the work in both routes is valid. Views and hours that fail YouTube's checks do not count, even if they briefly appeared on the video.

Views are not what drives reach

YouTube recommends videos based on how viewers respond to them: how long they watch, whether they come back, whether they seem satisfied. A view is the start of that, not the measure of it.

That is why average view duration and returning viewers matter more than the view count for whether a video spreads. A video with fewer views that are watched to the end often goes further than one with more views that are abandoned in seconds.

What this means if you buy views

Bought views change the public view count. They do not add the kind of watching that drives recommendations, and views that fail YouTube's checks can be removed, taking the count back down.

Views that stay but are watched briefly lower your average view duration, which is the opposite of what a creator wants the algorithm to see.

So the sensible uses are narrow: making a new video look less empty when you send it to people, in proportion to your channel's size. Do not buy views on a monetised channel, or on one about to apply to the Partner Program, where removed views and odd patterns carry real risk.

Common questions

How long do you have to watch for a YouTube view to count?

YouTube does not publish a minimum for long videos. The often-quoted 30 seconds is not an official rule. For Shorts, since 31 March 2025 every start or replay counts as a view.

Do replays count as views on YouTube?

On Shorts, yes, since March 2025. On long videos YouTube filters repeated views that do not look like genuine viewing, and does not publish exactly how.

Why did my YouTube view count go down?

YouTube removes views it decides were not genuine after checking them, and the public count falls when it does. A large one-off drop is almost always this.

What are engaged views on YouTube Shorts?

Engaged views are the old way of counting Shorts views, kept in YouTube Studio after the March 2025 change. The Shorts route into the Partner Program is measured in them.

Do Shorts views count toward the 4,000 watch hours?

No. The 4,000 watch hours come from long videos. Shorts have their own route: 10 million valid Shorts views in 90 days.
