Facebook Page followers vs likes: which number counts now?

Facebook Page followers have replaced likes as the number people see. What changed, why it matters for a small business, and how to grow the count.

What changed

For most of Facebook's history a business Page had two numbers, likes and followers. Liking a Page was a public endorsement. Following meant its posts could turn up in your feed. Most people did both at once, so the two numbers moved together and nobody thought much about the difference.

With the new Pages experience, which Meta rolled out over 2021 to 2023, Page likes were dropped. Pages now show followers, and the follower count is what appears under the Page name, in search and in the Page's intro. If you remember a like count on your Page and wonder where it went, that is the reason.

For anyone judging a Page, followers are now the number. That includes the customer who checks you on Facebook before visiting, and Meta's own ad tools, which report on followers.

Why the count matters for a small business

Facebook is still where a lot of people check a local business before they call. A dental clinic, a tuition centre, a caterer, a furniture shop: the Page is where a customer goes to confirm the business is real and still operating.

The follower count is part of that check. A Page with 43 followers and a last post from March looks abandoned. A Page with 2,400 followers and a post from last week looks like a business people use. The customer is not really counting. They are forming an impression, and the number shapes it.

It matters for ads too. When someone sees a sponsored post from a Page they have never heard of, the Page name and follower count are almost the only context they have.

Growing followers without paying for ads

Invite people who react. Page admins can invite people who reacted to a post to follow the Page. After any post that does well, open the list of reactions and work through the invite buttons. It is slow, but it is free and they are real people.

Put the Page wherever customers already are: bills and receipts, your WhatsApp status, a sign at the counter, email signatures, your Google Business Profile. Most local Pages are under-followed simply because customers never knew the Page existed.

Post things worth following. Offers, new stock, behind-the-scenes, answers to the questions customers keep asking on the phone. A Page that only posts festival greetings gives nobody a reason to follow.

Where buying followers fits

Buying followers is a shortcut for the first impression, not a replacement for any of the above. It works best for new Pages and for Pages that were neglected for a while, where the count is low enough to put visitors off.

A sensible order takes the count from 'looks abandoned' to 'looks established' for a business of your size. For a local shop that might mean going from 150 to 1,000. For a brand selling online across the country, a few thousand. Our Page followers start at 100 per order and cost $3.99 per 1,000 on High Quality.

Keep posting while the count grows. A Page that gains a thousand followers while its newest post is four months old looks exactly like what it is.

Pages and personal profiles

Followers can go to a public Page, or to a public personal profile that allows followers, which is how creators on Facebook usually work. The link needs to open for someone who is not logged in.

Friend requests are something else. We deliver followers, not friends, so nothing lands in your friend request list.

Mistakes that make a Page look fake

A follower count far ahead of the activity. A Page with 8,000 followers whose posts get 2 reactions invites the obvious conclusion. Keep the count in step with what your posts can support, and lift your key posts with likes if needed.

Followers on a dormant Page. If the Page has not posted in months, adding followers first puts things the wrong way round. Post for two or three weeks, then grow the count.

No reviews at all. Visitors to a local business Page often check recommendations. Thousands of followers and not one review looks odd, so ask happy customers to leave one. It does more for trust than any number.

A brand-new Page with a big count. Anyone can open the Page transparency section and see when a Page was created. A Page made last week with 5,000 followers looks bought, so grow new Pages in steps.

Drop-off and refill

Facebook removes fake and inactive accounts continuously, and every Page loses some followers over time, bought or not. High Quality orders are refilled free for 30 days and Premium orders for 90 days if the count falls below what you ordered.

Common questions

Do Facebook Pages still have likes?

Pages on the new Pages experience show followers instead of Page likes. Individual posts still have likes and other reactions.

Are followers or likes better for a Facebook Page?

Followers. It is the number Facebook now shows on Pages, and following is what lets your posts appear in someone's feed.

Will bought followers see or react to my posts?

No. They follow the Page, but they are not customers and will not engage. Buy them for the count visitors see, not for reach.

Can you add followers to a personal profile?

Yes, if the profile is public and allows followers. We deliver followers, not friend requests.

How much do Facebook Page followers cost?

$3.99 per 1,000 on High Quality and $4.99 on Premium, from 100 followers.

Do you need my Facebook login?

No. Only the public link to the Page or profile.

Why did my Facebook Page likes disappear?

Your Page moved to the new Pages experience, which drops Page likes and shows followers instead. The follower count is now the number visitors see, and it is the one worth growing.

How many followers should a new business Page have?

Enough that it does not look abandoned for a business of its size. For a local shop, somewhere around 500 to 1,500 is a comfortable start. For a brand selling across the country, a few thousand. Keep posting so the activity matches the count.
