Why TikTok ties features to followers

TikTok keeps a handful of features back until an account has an audience. A follower count is a rough, cheap test that an account is established rather than a throwaway, so it is used as the gate for things that are easy to abuse: going live to strangers, putting a clickable link in front of them, and getting paid.

Two things are worth knowing before planning around any number below. The requirements change, and they differ by country. What follows is how they stand at the time of writing in most regions. If a milestone matters to you, check it in the app first, because TikTok's own figure for your account is the only one that counts.

1,000 followers: LIVE and a link in your bio

In most regions you need 1,000 followers to go LIVE, and you must be 18 or over. Receiving Gifts from viewers during a LIVE also needs you to be 18 or over.

The same 1,000 is when a personal account can add a clickable website link to its bio. Business accounts can add one without reaching it, which is why some small shops switch account type early.

This is the milestone most people are chasing, and it is the one where the follower count really is the whole requirement. That makes it very different from the next one.

10,000 followers: the Creator Rewards Program

TikTok's Creator Rewards Program pays for original videos longer than one minute. To join, you need 10,000 followers, 100,000 video views in the last 30 days, to be 18 or over, and to live in a country where the programme runs.

The follower count is the easy half. The views requirement is the hard half, and it is judged on views TikTok considers genuine. Payment is also calculated on qualified views, which excludes the kinds of traffic TikTok filters out.

So an account can reach 10,000 followers and still be nowhere near earning. If the programme is the goal, plan around the views, not the followers.

Beyond 10,000: what the number does after that

Past 10,000 there are few hard gates left. What changes is how people treat the account.

Brands and agencies use follower counts as a first filter, then look at average views and comments on recent videos before they reply. A large count with small, uneven views is the thing they are trained to spot.

Other creators do the same when you pitch a collaboration. The follower number gets the message opened, and the last five videos decide the answer.

At 100,000 and beyond the count is mostly a signal of reach to people outside TikTok, on media kits, in press and in pitches. On the app itself, what gets a video shown is still how the first viewers watch it.

TikTok Shop and affiliate selling

TikTok Shop's affiliate programme, which lets creators earn commission on products they feature, sets its own follower requirement. It has changed several times and differs by country, from a few thousand followers in some markets to much lower in others.

Check the current figure in TikTok Shop's creator centre for your country before building a plan around it. This is the requirement people most often get wrong from old articles.

Where bought followers fit, and where they do not

Bought followers change the follower count and nothing else. They do not watch videos, and they do not count as the genuine views that the Creator Rewards Program looks for. For any milestone that also needs views, buying followers leaves the real requirement untouched.

Buying followers is also against TikTok's terms. TikTok removes accounts it decides are inauthentic, and when it does the count falls. An account that crossed 1,000 on bought followers can drop back below it, and lose the feature it crossed for.

Where people do use them is presentation: an account at 180 followers looks untried, and one at 1,500 does not. If you do buy, keep the count in proportion to your views, buy gradually, and never on an account you depend on for income.
